Don't Waste Your Life Study Questions

Study Questions (6/01/08)

Last weeks answers ... then this weeks questions ...

Don’t Waster your life

Part 3

Study Questions

1. Why do we exist?John 12:27 ¶ "Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, 'Father, save Me from this hour '? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 "Father, glorify Your name." Then a voice came out of heaven: "I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again." It is God’s goal to reveal Himself! It is God’s purpose to Glorify Himself.

As His creation we were created for this very same purpose! Isaiah 43:7 Everyone who is called by My name, And whom I have created for My glory, Whom I have formed, even whom I have made."This leads to the second question I want to deal with ...

2. How do we glorify God? (pgs. 29-30)To glorify God is to reveal the bigness of God in what we do and say.  So to glorify God is to make Him known for who He is! So to magnify God for who He is!  We when proclaim him and we obey Him ...  YET we must UNDERSTAND why we proclaim Him or why we obey HIM?  Because the motive of “why we do what we do” determines the depth of glory  God receives! If we do this because we love Him and are satisfied with Him then God is greatly glorified. If we do it with joy or delight in God then we are not only exalting him with our actions but we are also exalting Him in our attitude! pgs. 29 - 30 THE FALSE dichotomy of pg. 31 This page is the key to the book.  Is this a Biblical concept? Deuteronomy 28:45 "So all these curses shall come on you and pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because you would not obey the LORD your God by keeping His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you. 46 "They shall become a sign and a wonder on you and your descendants forever. 47 ¶ "Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and a glad heart, for the abundance of all things;

Matthew 22:36 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" 37 And He said to him, "'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.'

Deuteronomy 12:7, 18 "There also you and your households shall eat before the LORD your God, and rejoice in all your undertakings in which the LORD your God has blessed you. David’s and Asaph’s Psalm of Thanksgiving 1 Chronicles 16:7 ...

Psalm 40:16 Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; Let those who love Your salvation say continually, "The LORD be magnified!"

Psalm 89:15 How blessed are the people who know the joyful sound! O LORD, they walk in the light of Your countenance. 16 In Your name they rejoice all the day, And by Your righteousness they are exalted. 17 For You are the glory of their strength, And by Your favor our horn is exalted.

Philippians 4:4 ¶ Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Obedience is required!  Is obedience without joy SIN?  I will look at it on a different angle to try and bring this point home. Philippians 2:14 ¶ Do all things without grumbling or disputing; God is most glorified when we are most satisfied with HIM!

3. Does the Bible say being loved means being made much of? No! p. read highlighted 33 The more we can keep our eyes off ourselves the beter! Being loved is being pointed to the One who is better than me, CHRIST! So loving someone is helping them know the all satisfying GOD of the Bible. (p. 34)4. Where does the Bible say fullness of Joy is found? Psalm 16:11 You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.  This plays right into this morning message ... Where is the most joy found?

As Piper states “heaven is not a place full of mirrors!”  Heaven is Heaven because of Who is there and Who we will see, CHRIST!

5. Who should be first place in all our actions, conversations, and life? (p. 38)  1 Corinthians 1:23 but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness, 2 Corinthians 4:5 For we do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond-servants for Jesus' sake. Ephesians 3:8 To me, the very least of all saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ, great final quote p. 41!

Now lets look at Chapter 3 ...1. What should be our one single passion? Read p. 44-46! a. Our single aim? 1 Corinthians 2:2 For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.

b. This is single mindness! Is Paul close MINDED? YES! Are you? What is a wasted life? Not having a relationship with God...p.45  Philippians 3:7 But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ,

c. WHAT is the one passion in your life that makes everything else look like rubbish? Read p. 49 What is your primary passion in LIFE? Retirement, children, family, houses, cars, career, knowledge?

2. What should be OUR Single boast? Scriptures? Galatians 6:14 But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. The term boast can be translated as Friberg states in a good sense of an attitude of  confidence in God rejoice in, glory in, boast in. Read p. 49  Romans 5:11 And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus  Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.  What do we glory in ... Job, intelligence, good deeds, children, family, friends, money, etc ... SELF?

3. How can we boast in other things and yet still be boasting in Christ?  1. We rejoice in Hope of the glory of God (Romans 5:2)  2. We rejoice in our sufferings and endurance produces character and character produces hope (Romans 5:3-4)  3. I will boat all the more gladly in my weakness, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. (2 Cor 12:9).  4. What is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at His coming? Is it not YOU?  Because all of these great truths are possible because of the death of CHRIST (read 51)!

4. Why should we view everything as a blessing because of the cross of Christ? Because everything is a gift from our merciful Father (including suffering as we will see.) We are the creation not the Creator and because we are sinners! Read p.52; 53-54! APART from the Cross there is ONLY judgment!

The new questions for Chapter 4 ...

1. Suffering with Jesus on the Calvary road of love is not merely the __________ of magnifying Christ; it is also the ______. p. 61 How is suffering the means of Christ being magnified?

2. How is fleeing from death the shortest path to a wasted life? p. 63

3. What did Paul hope that he would not be at all ashamed? p. 65

4. How is dying gain?

5. When we trust in Christ are we trusting in what He will give us or are we trusting in Him as the all satisfying one? p. 70
